Equine Affaire-April 2007

"Trail Mix": starring Brenda Webster, Beth Bardash, Rio and Dancer
We started out our riding season in fine fashion. In April, we were chosen to participate in a variety
of clinics at the Equine Affaire as "demo horse/riders". That meant we were there to serve as
examples of what (and more often) what not, to do according to the clinicians we worked with.
Beth worked with Suzanne Sheppard and Bob Jeffreys on a variety of general horse training
issues. Brenda participated in one of these clinics as well and was also chosen to work with
Brenda Imus (Gaits of Gold). Brenda W's horse is a gaited-Spotted Saddle Horse.
I had only had Rio about a year at that point and had never taken her to anything quite like this. I
really hadn't even taken her out on any long trail rides yet. It was a nerve wracking experience at
first. Thursday night was chilly and windy. I wasn't sure how Rio would be in front of a crowd, flags
flapping and four-wheelers whizzing by. It turns out I was worried for nothing. Rio was a real
trooper and did not get excited or spook at anything. That's when I finally realized what a terrific
horse I have. My friends will tell you that they had been telling me all along but some things take a
while to sink in with me apparently.
It was great having the horses there at Equine Affaire in the barn with the other horses. We got to
see what it's like behind the scenes.
Brenda participated in 5 different demos during the time we were there. Dancer and she were
instant celebs in the gaited clinics. She even had a fan following! She has said that next year she
won't do as many since there were alot of clinics and demos that she missed because she was so
busy.
If you haven't been to EA you are really missing out on a really terrific opportunity to surround
yourself with "horseness" for four days. There is something there for everyone-great shopping,
breed demonstrations, training clinics and one of my favorites, Craig Cameron's Extreme Cowboy
Race. Did I mention the shopping?
