A note from Beth...
This is the spot for YOUR stories.  I started this with the hopes that we can continue to form a community.  A community that is
made up of horse-minded people who are similar to each other in some ways and still very different in others.  We’ll learn from
each other, laugh with (and at) each other and offer encouragement when it is needed.  Everyone has a story to tell.  We own
horses because they bring something special into our lives.  We have them in our lives for different reasons. For some, it’s the
thrill of competition and the challenge of honing our skills. For others, it’s a lifelong dream that is finally a reality. Some have
had horses all their lives and it just “is”.  You may have gotten into horses because a horse crazy girl in your life caught you in
a weak moment—you wallet magically opening at every turn.  Whatever the reason we are (usually) a community of like minded
souls.  We strive to help others improve their horse relationships, we lend a hand (and tack) when needed, we offer
advice…always well meaning.

So don't be shy, send us you stories. Share your tales, your triumphs and your challenges.

Mary's Story
My name is Mary, and I am a 41 year old  mother of an 11 year old daughter and a 14 year old son.  I am a new rider as of
last spring.  My daughter began liking horses a couple years ago and we heard that BIT -N- BRIDLE Trailriding in Mohican
were down-sizing last year, so that is where we got our first horses: GINGER-my daughter's, PRINCESS-mine!

They thought they were both quarter horse crosses.  My daughter was off to a "galloping" start  when she gets on back in
our hay field and asks PRINCESS to trot and she goes into a canter/gallop a couple laps, with the horse finally coming to a
stop beside me!! THANKFULLY, all went well!!  Then 2 weeks later, (4/19) we got our new English saddle in the mail, so I
walked her on PRINCESS down our lane and then on back to our field.  She got off and then I got on--well I believe the
horse turned around and bolted to the barn and I jumped off.  I fell on my left hip and then hit the right side of my head--I
had a concussion!!  I don't remember any of it--but I guess we walked back to barn, daughter untacked, we go down to the
house and I keep asking "What just happened?"  So my husband, (a Mt. Vernon Firefighter/EMT!) calls the squad I go to
ER--I have a concussion.  I had just bought a helmet that afternoon--it was still in the box in the truck!!  So even though
they can be uncomfortable at times, I am now an advocate of helmets!  I am so thankful I was given a second chance!

My daughter and I begin lessons in June.  On our first lesson, the instructor thinks that PRINCESS looks like a
Thoroughbred, so she looks in her mouth and finds a tatoo!!  I go home and call the trailriding place and they said they had
found registration papers on her so I got them.  We look up the tatoo and find out that she is a thoroughbred from Tampa
Bay, Florida.  She used to race at Tampa Downs until 1998/99 and actually won some and paced in the top 3 in some
others!  To top it off, we find out her great granfather is SECRETARIAT!!  and way on back on the sires bloodline is MAN
'OWAR!  No wonder we were off to such a "fast" start!

We hated to sell her because that seems like she has such a neat background, and she is a sweet horse.  So since she
was mine, I began to look for a little slower horse!  In July I found a quarter horse named DOC'S STORMY REY (STORMY).
She has been pretty good.  We have ridden STORMY and GINGER pretty often since then...but....in late August I took
STORMY and GINGER to a friend's house ( Carla-a mutual friend of Beth and I).  It was getting late (almost 8:00 PM) and
we take a nice trail ride on her beautiful property.  All is going well, then Carla's saddle is loose and I get off to help her
tighten it.  I go to get back on STORMY--not as limber as I used to be and I am kinda clumsy about it and fall forward a little,
and the horse spook-bucks and I end up going off!  I muster up the courage to get back on and we ride back to the house
and load up--humbling myself to my husband..again! (He has always said--"We are not getting any damn horses--they're
too dangerous!)  The next week I find our I broke my shoulder!!  So no riding until mid-November or December!

Believe it or not, I wasn't and am not ready to give up--as a matter of fact I am more determined that I am going to learn to
ride!  Ever since then I have been taking lessons here and there and working with STORMY--weather permitting.  This last
week or so I am about to go crazy because it's been too bad to ride much.  Carla and I have a lesson together on
Sunday--hopefull, if she gets her way, you'll see her posting about HER horse on here someday!

I am not sure what direction I want to take.  I have never cantered, so that would probably be my next goal.  STORMY has a
lot of good cutting horses in her background.  Here I was thinking that I would like her to be able to go the nice, slow gaits
like in western pleasure; but I've been told she may not really be as able to do that with her bloodlines.  I am a little
interested in seeing if she does have a good "cow-sense" and see if she could do any of that.  I just can't hardly imagine ME
doing any of that--but I may be gamed to try!  I think PRINCESS would be a beautiful  horse ( we do still have her!) for
English riding.  I would like to have someone work with her and then I would like to try her again.  My daughter is taking
GINGER to the fair for the first time this year.

I have been experimenting with clicker training with some fasinating results--I'll keep you posted!
